Between COVID-19 and cold weather, family-friendly outdoor activities can be more challenging than ever to pull off. To help make it easier, Dishman Hills Conservancy and the Spokesman-Review are sponsoring a family-friendly and adult-challenging winter scavenger hunt that involves finding an item out in nature that is a match for each letter of the alphabet.

“Going outside gives us exercise, enjoyment, and connection to the real world,” says Jeff Lambert, executive director of the Dishman Hills Conservancy (DHC). “Even if the weather is lousy, you can take the kids out for an hour to find the alphabetic matches using names of plants, animals, minerals, colors, shapes, activities, or places.”

Scavenger hunt participants need to keep track of what they see or do as they document their finds, for example, a for aspen, b for basalt, c for clouds, d for duck and so on. Using your imagination will help, says Lambert. Items should not be collected or disturbed but only observed in their natural setting, appreciated, and then documented with a photo.

For extra encouragement, DHC has created a Nature Explorer program, which is free to join by registering for the scavenger hunt online. Participants will receive helpful tips and fun ideas for how to explore and prizes for completing the A-to-Z Scavenger Hunt.

Participants have the whole month of January and until February 28 to complete the hunt anytime they choose. Visit the DHC events page at Dishmanhills.org/events for more details and instructions for submitting photos of the scavenger hunt items you document. Participants may receive a certificate and a patch and other prizes for adults are also in the works.

Clue #4: Getting closer! You won’t find the booty sitting out in the open, although if you are in the right place and look closely you should be able to see at least a little of the taped up envelope (pictured above) from its camouflaged hiding place.

Clue #3: From the trailhead at Liberty Park, you’ll want to head up a ways, just not up these.

Clue #2: You definitely don’t need to climb on rocks or near exposed areas to find this booty, but you’ll see some of these basalt towers on the way there!

Clue #4: It’s not Christmas, but you’ve gone too far! Just not by a ton.

Clue #3: Even closer yet. Please be aware that someone had their car window broken and a bag stolen at the trailhead this weekend. Don’t leave anything that looks valuable in your vehicle.

Clue #2: Getting closer. Just a reminder to wear good traction on your feet and consider hiking poles while there is snow/ice on the trail. And stay a safe distance from the edge of the trail next to the drop off down to the river. We usually hide backcountry booty prize vouchers somewhere between the trailhead and a mile to a mile and a half from the trailhead, so plan to enjoy a nice walk!

Clue #1: Know where this paved trail parking lot is? Find it and start walking and looking around! You won’t need to look very far off the trail. As long as there is snow/ice on the ground, wear the best traction boots and spikes like these if you can. Trekking poles like these from Leki help too. And please don’t go near ravine edges where you could slip and fall! Have fun out there.

It’s going to be HOT this week! So, we hid the Booty alongside the river to help you stay cool: this Booty is hidden at Riverside State Park!

Begin by crossing the swinging bridge. Choose a direction on Trail 25 and search low near the river! The Booty is hidden within a mile of the bridge.

Clue #2

When you cross the swinging bridge, take a right on Trail 25. When you come to the option of many trails (above), bear right again—toward the river! The Booty certificate (that brown paper square) is hidden in something old.
