Walk through the narrow entrance to Baby Bar and you’ll find yourself in one of downtown Spokane’s most beloved hangouts. Dimly lit, with unique paintings and juice squeezed fresh right in front of you, the place radiates a community vibe you can feel as soon as you step inside. Just next door, Neato Burrito dishes out giant burritos that are vegan-friendly with a satisfying meat option. Together, the two spots are more than a bar and burrito joint—they’re an extension of the home of owners Patty and Tim and the family they’ve raised inside those walls.

Patty started at Baby Bar as an employee after working at the Elk Public House. It was at the Elk that she realized she wanted her own place. “I liked how they did things there. I felt appreciated,” she says. That sense of appreciation has carried through everything she and Tim have built. They don’t call their staff employees—they’re coworkers, each with a seat at the table.

Their children—Ruby, Bennett, and Banks—grew up at Baby Bar. “Ruby was two when we started,” Patty says. After school, the kids would come in to clean, prep and help however they could. “This place really was an extension of our home,” she adds. Adam, who started working there years ago and never left, is now considered part of the family too. Today, it’s the kids who keep Neato and Baby Bar running strong.

In 2023, Patty tried retirement. It lasted a year. “I was going nuts!” she laughs. She’s now back where it all began—working at the Elk and enjoying it—while her kids keep the burritos rolling and the bar lights glowing.

If the Baby Bar feels like home, that’s intentional. Written behind the bar are “house rules,” the same kind you’d expect if you were sitting in someone’s living room. “Community breeds community,” Tim says. “That’s what this place is all about.”

Live shows are part of the heartbeat of the bar. Since COVID, all performances have been all-ages, opening the door to a new generation of music fans. Drag nights and open-mic poetry fill out the schedule, keeping the space vibrant and creative. Both Patty and Tim once played in bands, and their love of performance continues to shape the culture of Baby Bar.

For others, it’s the drinks. The bar’s reputation for fresh-squeezed juice (orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit) means you can order something refreshing, boozy or not. “We can make just about anything non-alcoholic,” Patty says.

And then there’s the food. Neato Burrito is that rare spot where everyone—vegan, gluten-free or meat-loving—can sit down together and find something they love. “It’s really easy to feed people when it’s healthy,” Tim says. If the bar is open, the kitchen is serving, and for many in Spokane, that combination has made Neato Burrito part of the rhythm of daily life.

Even the details reflect Patty and Tim’s values. They swapped out PBR for Douglas Lager, a 100% locally-produced beer, and kept the price the same. It’s a small move, but one that underscores their commitment to supporting Spokane.

That ethos extends beyond the walls of the bar and burrito shop. For years, Neato Burrito and Baby Bar have run ads in Out There Venture. Their hand-drawn artwork, once sketched by local artist Tiffany Patterson, later by Patty with a Sharpie, and now by their son Bennett, has become a kind of scavenger hunt for readers. You can always find their ad—it just might take a moment to decipher it—and that uniqueness has become part of their charm.

When asked why they continue to advertise with Out There Venture, their answer is simple: “It’s locally owned, and we love the outdoors,” Tim says. “The readers are our people. They’re active, outdoorsy and they care about what they put in their bodies. I mean, a burrito is the perfect travel food.”

Like the magazine, Neato Burrito and Baby Bar are rooted in community. Family-owned, deeply loved, and still guided by the idea that a neighborhood spot can feel like home, they’ve built a place where you can always find a friend—and a really good burrito!

The Great Spokane Shop Ride (GSSR) is a sort of hair scramble event in which riders gather on the second Saturday in April (the 12th this year) at the Riverfront Park clock tower to receive a stamp card, and at the stroke of 10 a.m. they scatter in all directions to get their cards stamped at every bike shop in town by whatever route they choose. There is a finish line ceremony at Brick West Brewing where riders will have the opportunity to hoist the Banana of Victory as they tell war stories, laugh, and sip fizzy beverages. There is a banana for the fastest time, one for the most efficient route, one for the most elevation (my personal favorite), and a banana for the Red Caboose (last rider in), which was hoisted last year by Charlie Greenwood, the nutty professor of Spokane cycling.

The forecast can look grim in early spring, so don’t be at all surprised when you see only two riders standing by the clock tower 15 minutes before the kickoff. Within minutes, though, the numbers will swell into the double digits—we had 13 last year. There’s no sign-in sheet, no entry fee, and no rules other than be safe and have fun.

Dan Webber, the instigator-in-chief of GSSR, will be there with Sue Craigmile, the chief-administrative-instigator, to pass out stamp cards in protective Ziplock sandwich bags so they don’t dissolve in the threatening rain, because rain is always threatening this time of year.

It still seems like Spokane has an awful lot of bike shops, even though we’ve lost a few. Wheelsport North, Fitness Fanatics, and the downtown Bike Hub have closed, as well as Rambleraven Gear Trader, and this town really misses Rambleraven. If we lose any more, we may have to combine the Spokane Stairmaster with this event. (What the hell is that, you ask? That’s another Dan Webber creation that involves carrying your bike up 25 staircases in 20 miles.) Though, Spokane Alpine Haus will now be carrying bikes at both of their locations for 2025, and by the time you read this the brand-new Hillyard Bicycle shop will be up and running just a stone’s throw from the Children of the Sun Trail, adding three more shops into the fray.

The whole inspiration behind GSSR is to step inside each shop, yuck it up with the folks therein, and perhaps have them throw a beer or a sleeve of Girl Scout cookies at you. It’s a community building effort of sorts. Our bike community and shop culture here is the stuff of greatness, and it’s not often that we get to pop into each and every one to say “hi all” in a single day.

So where do we go when the proverbial gun goes off? As I mentioned, riders scatter in all directions. I like to get the climbing out of the way early, and north is always uphill, so I usually head north to REI, home shop of the aforementioned instigator-in-chief, and in keeping with tradition no one in there will have any idea about GSSR or where the stamps might be: at the front register? In the bike department in the back? Hidden in a tent display? It’s always a mystery.

Sometimes riders like to go south first and get the South Hill out of the way, as though south could possibly be uphill. We have two destinations up there. Wheelsport and Spokane Alpine Haus, which may still have all their skis on display at that point in the season. But if there’s a single bike in there, that castle is going to get stormed.

The ride itself ranges from around 42 miles for the most efficient route to somewhere around 56 miles for my adventure route, that for all three editions has climbed over Beacon Hill through the mountain bike park. That’s a big day for most riders this early in the season, so be sure to pace yourself.

This year GSSR coincides with the Hubapalooza mountain bike race once again. If there’s one way to take seeing all your bike shop friends in one day up a notch, it’s running into a bunch of your mountain bike friends in race mode, and perhaps sharing a fizzy beverage in the beer garden, for those 21 years or older of course. Non-alcoholic options have come a long way, which is usually my preference…unless I’m at the The Bike Hub in the Perry District. Come to think of it, Mojo Cyclery out on Argonne has expanded its floor space and has a pass-thru window into Badass Backyard Brewing. Mojo is the shop that got me into the weird stuff I’m doing these days—riding, not drinking.

When riders come crawling into the finish line festivities at Brick West, that’s when we find out who lost a limb trying to rub the shop cat’s belly at North Division Bike Shop, that’s when you’ll shoot fizzy beverages out of your nostrils from laughing about all the absurd things that happened, and that’s when you’ll know why the Great Spokane Shop Ride is so great.

Justin Short is a long-time writer for OTO and keeps his finger on the pulse of the bike community in the Inland Northwest so you won’t miss any of the weird cycling stuff going down.

Local artist and lifty brings ski area walls to life on the mountain.

Article and photos by T Ghezzi

A self-proclaimed mountain girl, Olivia Walker is much more than a Silver Mountain Resort lift operator, or “lifty.” Her talent as an artist has recently brightened and brought life to the Mountain House lodge at the top of the gondola in the form of six murals.

Olivia has lived in the Silver Valley for almost 10 years, and mountain life truly is in Olivia’s blood. She grew up in Aspen Valley, Colo., and started skiing at the age of three. Her dad was also a lifty at Snow Mass Ski Resort. She expressed how it is “healing to be up in the mountains and in nature,” and, as a lifty, she enjoys helping others spend time in the snowy mountains skiing and snowboarding.

From a young age, she had passion for art, which led her to Seattle to study art and interior design. She got an art degree there and, years later, worked as an interior designer in Coeur d’Alene.

Last summer, while touching up the ski racks at Silver with a new coat of paint, her supervisor (not knowing Olivia’s art background) casually suggested to her that it would be cool to have a mural painted on an outside door of the mountain lodge. Olivia quickly jumped in and said she would do it.

Her murals are all vibrant with color, which she says is opposite of her more reserved, introverted personality. The mountain life art resembles stained glass, has layers of color, and has an abundance of abstract and geometric shapes with bold outlines. Talking to Olivia, you can really feel the passion she has for her designs and how honored she is to create artwork for other mountain lovers to enjoy.

All of Olivia’s six murals can be found at the top of the gondola around the Mountain House lodge at Silver. Here is a brief description of her murals in order of creation and location. The first piece is a vibrant, sunlit sky with cool, snow-covered mountains (located outside between the ski rental and the main gondola doors). The second showcases multiple layers of mountain colors with the sun just peeking out (in the brown bag room). The third painting has three massive snowflakes, with the central flake being the Silver Mountain logo (in the brown bag room). The fourth mural (my personal favorite) is rich in color and displays a vivid complexity of the sun, trees, and snow (on the lift operations door). The fifth exhibits two ski patrollers standing on Wardner Peak, with Kellogg Peak and the setting sun in the background (in the ski patrol entryway). The last and most recent mural is a magical, life-like tree with storybook lanterns hanging from the branches, accompanied by a warm sun and the shadows it creates as the backdrop (in the daycare).

Next time you visit Silver Mountain, take the time to explore the Mountain Lodge, find your favorite piece, and soak in Olivia’s beautiful murals.

Follow Olivia’s mural journey on Instagram @liv_landman or Facebook at Liv Landman Design. For art inquires, you can contact her at mail2livlandman@gmail.com.

Having spent three weeks this summer snowboarding and chasing powder in Chile and Argentina, T. Ghezzi is stoked to chase local pow and record more episodes of the “Wild Cannons” podcast. “Wild Cannons” is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts & YouTube. Instagram @WildCannons.

New Humbird Hotel Opens at Schweitzer https://outthereventure.com/new-humbird-hotel-opens-at-schweitzer/ https://outthereventure.com/new-humbird-hotel-opens-at-schweitzer/#respond Sun, 13 Feb 2022 04:34:21 +0000 https://outthereventure.com/?p=49884 The new Humbird 31-room hotel recently opened, providing additional ski-in/ski-out access to Schweitzer’s 2,900 acres of skiable terrain.

Schweitzer, the largest ski resort in Washington and Idaho, is expanding its village experience with the opening of the new Humbird hotel today. The boutique 31-room property provides ski-in/ski-out access to Schweitzer’s 2,900 acres of skiable terrain.

Set above the quaint town of Sandpoint, and only 80 miles from Spokane, Wash., Humbird offers a sleek updated take on the classic ski lodge with views of the mountains and nearby Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in the state.

“Humbird represents a real evolution in the lodging scene in North Idaho,” said Tom Chasse, president and chief executive officer of Schweitzer. “We took great care to build a beautiful hotel that will connect guests directly to the outdoor experiences they come here to enjoy. Equally important, we worked to ensure that Humbird will meet the needs of modern travelers by providing spaces where they can relax, recharge, refuel and even stay plugged in as needed.”

The three-story hotel, located in the heart of Schweitzer’s intimate village, offers 31 guestrooms with a mix of room types including single king rooms, double queen rooms and one oversized suite. Each room features an inviting window seat set against a panoramic window offering spectacular views of nearby Lake Pend Oreille.

Designed with travelers’ comfort in mind, rooms include items to aid mountain adventure such as boot dryers, locally roasted Evans Brothers Coffee and mugs hand painted by local artists. Locally produced bath amenities will offer a custom cedarwood and orange scent, formulated with aloe vera, jojoba oil, sunflower oil and avocado oil to help combat the dry winter air. Rooms also come with binoculars to take further advantage of the sweeping views.

The hotel’s design, courtesy of noted Portland, Oregon-based Skylab, is a contemporary take on the classic ski lodge that draws on the heritage of the area and connection to the natural surroundings. Built using mass timber construction, the sleek exposed wood structure conjures images of early mountain lodges with a minimal and modern feel. Inside, the hotel is decorated with historic photos sourced through a partnership with the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum as well as new artwork inspired by the surrounding lake, forest and snow.

Humbird offers ample space to relax including the Glass Room which serves as the hotel’s unique living room. Surrounded by glass on three sides, the Glass Room offers treetop views stretching across multiple states and Lake Pend Oreille. Flexible seating, perfect for relaxing or playing a game, melts into the design of the Glass Room to let the view and modern architecture shine. The Glass Room includes a foosball table and a large retractable projection screen, perfect to watch a movie or host a meeting.

A third-floor rooftop deck sits atop the space with open-air views and a 12-person hot tub. Guests can also enjoy the well-equipped onsite fitness center and a heated community outdoor pool.

Located just off the lobby, Humbird’s onsite restaurant, Crow’s Bench, serves upscale Alpine-inspired cuisine. Design elements speak to the region’s lineage of outdoor recreation including globe lights hung above the bar that spell out “pray for snow” in Morse code.

Schweitzer’s Patrol Dogs, who assist Schweitzer’s Ski Patrol with daily duties, will host regular meet and greet sessions at the hotel. The Patrol Dogs will add some furry fun to Humbird’s après scene on select dates by relaxing and playing with guests on the hotel’s outdoor patio.

Phase two of Humbird, which includes a new Wellness Center and an innovative ski and gear storage system, is expected to open this summer. The new Wellness Center at Schweitzer will offer well-appointed therapy rooms for massages and spa treatments as well a tranquil relaxation room.

The facility will also offer ski storage lockers for Humbird guests on a separate floor. The tech centric ski lockers will be controlled by an app, allowing guests unfettered access to their equipment without a wait.

The hotel is named for the Humbird Lumber Company, which was the lifeblood of Sandpoint’s economy and community in the early 1900’s. More than just a place to work, Humbird Lumber Company built an all-encompassing community by attracting new residents to the area, building schools, functioning as the local store and even serving as the title sponsor of the local baseball team. The work and community attracted men, women and families who were hungry for adventure and enjoyed the outdoors, a spirit that is encapsulated in the hotel and is still pervasive among current visitors to the area.

Humbird is part of the resort’s multi-year master plan launched in 2017. This winter, Schweitzer also debuted several on-mountain improvements including new on-mountain dining and RFID technology to make getting on the slopes easier than ever. As part of the plan, Schweitzer will also debut a number of new residential real estate options, including 5-Needles at White Pine, a 26-unit expansion to an existing base-area condominium complex that is currently sold out and expected to complete construction within the next year.

Winter rates at Humbird start at $450. For more information, including reservations, please visit www.humbirdhotel.com.

Schweitzer open year-round for four-season recreation opportunities: Located in the rugged Selkirk Mountains of the northern Idaho panhandle, the new Humbird hotel (bottom right, artistic rendering), provides ski-in/ski-out access. // All photos courtesy Schweitzer.

By Christina Deubel

As an artist and Spokane native, I am endlessly inspired by the beauty of our local landscapes. To sit beside an alpine lake and watch the sunbeams kiss the mountains, to slumber amongst giants in an old growth forest . . . such places, just beyond our doorstep, are breathtaking.

I was raised on the trails, mountains, and lakes of our surrounding area and took my son for his first backpacking trip at the age of seven. After my son graduated this year, being an empty-nester and not even 40 got my wheels turning. There’s a big old beautiful world out there waiting for me to explore and paint!

I converted an old Chevy van into an art studio on wheels and decided to immerse myself in the wild places that offer me such inspiration. I set out to explore every inch of the Northwest.

Admittedly, that’s an impossible task. With millions of acres of public lands, from state parks, national forests, and wilderness areas to BLM, DNR, and county and city park land, I feel like a kid in a candy store. The Northwest has it all: vibrant colors, moody atmosphere, rich textures, and curious wildlife. The opportunities for adventure and beauty are endless.

I strive to create works of art that capture the places I visit and people I meet. But my deepest goal is to capture that feeling of love for the great outdoors with my paintings.

I paint not with brushes like most artists but instead by using my fingers and hands. You will often find mountain landscapes, vibrant sunsets, hikers, bikers, paddleboarders, and wildlife in my paintings. These works, in which I’m literally elbow deep in paint, are expressions of pure love, passion, and admiration for the outdoors.

The trails and public lands I’ve been visiting offer me such inspiration that I decided it was time to give something back. I began doing volunteer trail work with Washington Trails Association, and then after riding the trails at Beacon/Camp Sekani, I knew I wanted to paint a mural there.

I worked with Evergreen East and Spokane Parks & Rec to get permission for the painting, which ended up being on the garage door at the entrance to the park. Inspired by an image by Spokane photographer Aaron Theisen, I painted a vibrant, explosive piece depicting one of our local riders, Alex Anderson, sending it into the sunset. [Editor’s note: Theisen is also an OTO contributor.]

The mural at Beacon was my first public work of art, and while there painting, I was inspired by all of the people out enjoying the trails. This 46-mile trail system is one of the largest in the state and has rides for all abilities.

Unfortunately, much of Beacon’s epic trail system is still on privately owned land. Evergreen East Mountain Bike Alliance has been working with the public lands agencies that manage the land as well as some private land owners to raise the funds needed to acquire some of the properties that many of the trails pass through.

If they succeed, their efforts will combine what are now four separate chunks of park land into one large park and trail system that will be protected for generations of riders and trail users.

Artists in Yellowstone—Thomas Moran

By Nyomi Meinhart

Thomas Moran was born February 12, 1837, in Bolton, England, but he lived to play an important role in American conservation of wild places. At age seven, his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and later to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

When Thomas was 16 he began his artistic training in a wood engravers shop. At 18, he left woodworking and began painting. Thomas made illustrations for Scribner’s Magazine, and in fact he found out about the Hayden Expedition through Scribner’s. The Hayden Expedition went to Yellowstone as the first scientific exploration of the area in 1871. Thomas went with another artist, Willaim Henry Jackson, a photographer.

Once in Yellowstone he made sketches of the Gardiner River, Mammoth Hot Springs, Liberty Cap, Tower Fall and The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Once he had a portfolio of sketches and watercolors he went home to fix up his finished paintings. Jackson later wrote, “The wonderful coloring of Moran’s paintings made all the difference.” His art convinced Congress to preserve Yellowstone as our first national park in 1872!

Moran’s 7×12 foot painting of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone was purchased by Congress for $10,000. It hung in the White House for many years. Together they helped give America its first national park, and as they did so they became known across the country for their journey and their artwork. We will always remember Thomas Moran as the first person to paint Yellowstone.

Provisions: The Love Of God Brewing https://outthereventure.com/provisions-the-love-of-god-brewing/ Fri, 31 Jul 2020 15:58:16 +0000 https://outthereventure.com/?p=42711 For the Love of God Brewing offers hoppy, sour, and dark beer styles as well as a rotating on-tap beers in its Spokane brewery.

For The Love Of God Brewing has only been open about a year, but they’re certainly making a name for themselves as one of the best breweries to visit in Spokane. Steve and Dawn Moss are the owners, and Steve is the mastermind behind all the beers.

Walking into the brewery is like experiencing a little bit of the Inland Northwest. It’s full of artwork from local artists, as well as games, puzzles, and foosball. It’s clear that Steve and Dawn run their brewery with two things in mind: making high quality beers and serving them with kindness.

The flavor profile of their beers emphasizes hoppy, sour, and dark beer styles, and they’re frequently brewing new beers to change up what’s on tap. Steve uses fruit in many of the beers, as well as spices like cinnamon and vanilla bean. Their beers aren’t filtered because they believe that unfiltered beers create better flavor profiles. Right now they’re serving nine beers, which include the Cran-Raz Crumble Sour, Apricobb, and So Much S’more.

Kids are just as welcome as adults at the brewery, and they even have root beer or San Pelegrino for the little ones. As far as food goes, they’ve selected items that will pair well with their beers, like stuffed mushrooms, soft pretzels, or chocolate-covered cookies. A So Much S’more beer paired with a chocolate covered cookie sounds like the perfect combination for a hot summer night.

There’s no seating at the bar at the moment (during spring/summer 2020 Washington State business closures due to COVID-19, but customers can still sit and enjoy a beer at a table. They’re also selling some cans to go and will happily fill growlers if a customer brings in their own.
