When visiting a ski area with kids or anyone who is still learning to ski or snowboard, it’s important to know the best runs that will match their ability levels. Some beginner-friendly runs are less steep and shorter, making it easier to get down the mountain before fatigue sets in. Some lifts are easier for kids and adult beginners to get on and off safely. The best way to set the stage for a great day on the slopes is to ask resort staff from the ski school for advice on which lifts to take and which runs to ski based on the abilities of your family, the current snow conditions and the weather. But by far the best decision you can make for your child or anyone learning a winter sport is to sign them up for lessons. 

These beginner-friendly runs at the four Ski the Northwest Rockies resorts are a great option for new riders who are just getting started or looking to take the next step beyond the magic carpet or bunny hill terrain. 

49 Degrees North  

Location: Chewelah, WA 

Surface Lift: Gold Fever, located near the lodge in the ski school teaching area. A great place for kids and adults to learn. 

Bunny Hill: 49 has some of the longest and most diverse bunny hill terrain of any local mountain that is accessed via the Payday Lift (Chair #3). Give Easy Slide, Gold Chute or Fool’s Gold a try. 

Beginner Runs: 49 Degrees North is the second largest ski area in Washington State and has plenty of beginner-friendly slopes. Local favorites include Huckleberry Ridge and Big Bear located in Sunrise Basin, Quartzite Ridge off Angel Peak and Lost Dutchman to the 4800 Road in the West Basin. 

Lookout Pass  

Location: Mullan, ID 

Bunny Hill: Success Slope via Success Triple Chairlift provides a slow, comfortable beginner chairlift experience for kids, parents or anyone just learning, followed by some excellent low-angled practice slopes to help boost beginner confidence. 

Beginner Runs: Huckleberry Ridge to Grub Steak run. Get there via the Peak One Quad Chairlift and ask the liftie to slow it down for the beginners in the group. The Huckleberry Jam Progression Park allows parents and kids to learn to ride on small terrain-style features.   

Mt. Spokane 

Location: Mead, WA 

Magic Carpet: Located just below Lodge 2 (main lodge) near the ski school building and bunny hill chairlift. 

Bunny Hill: Ego Flats via the Beginner’s Luck lift (Chair 5). 

Beginner Runs: Northwest Passage, via Parkway Express (Chair 3). Also try Half Hitch, staying skier’s right to avoid the terrain park or Jim’s Gem via Northwood (Chair 6), which is a more challenging beginner run on the backside of the mountain that requires a long return to the front side and lodge via Northwest Passage. 

Silver Mountain 

Location: Kellogg, ID 

Surface Lift: Prospector Adventure Lift (covered conveyor lift) located by the Mountain House. 

Bunny Hill: Easy Street—near the surface lift and Mountain House. 

Beginner Runs: Check out Ross Run, which follows the gondola line down to Dawdler, Bear Grass or Huckleberry before ending up at Chair 5. Below the Magic Carpet, try the Claim Jumper run that leads to the bottom of Chair 5 which runs slower for kids and beginners.

Lessons for Everyone 
Lessons are available for ages 2 through adult, with both group and private options. A few lesson highlights include: 

• Private Lesson 5-Pack: For ages 2 and up, consider a five-pack of private lessons for $375 (regular private lessons are $99 per hour). It’s a solid deal and a great stocking stuffer.  

• Group lessons are offered from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and are $65. Rentals can be added for $20. Lift tickets are sold separately.  

• The Kids’ First Timers Learn to Ski or Snowboard package is $199 and valid for any three days this winter. Participants receive three lessons, three rental setups and three lift tickets. Valid for kids ages 7 to 12. Similar offerings are available for older kids and adults. It’s best to commit to three days when first learning to ski or snowboard. 

Lookout’s World-Famous Free Ski School 

For kids ages 7–17, this program has been running since 1940. It is the longest-running free ski school in the country. Ski or snowboard lessons are offered on seven specific Saturdays during the winter (participants must attend one of the first lessons to participate throughout the season). Children are placed in groups based on age and skill level and receive roughly an hour and a half of instruction. Lookout Pass strongly suggests that all students purchase a season pass or a lift ticket three-pack so they can continue to ski before or after their lessons. Lookout also offers affordably priced, season-long rental ski or snowboard packages.  

More Space to Relax 

With the grand opening of the Snow Globe—a sprung structure that opened last year—Lookout continues to offer additional space for skiers and riders to warm up and refuel. The Snow Globe includes comfortable couches, large-screen TVs and a more relaxed vibe than the historic lodge next door. 

The original historic lodge (the second-oldest in the Northwest) still serves hot breakfasts, hearty meals, pizza, chili, hamburgers, hot dogs and fries, along with hot and cold drinks. The program kicks off with a two-day Orientation/Leadership Training Program. Kids will be scheduled for shifts throughout the season and assist in ski school classes under the guidance of their ski school group mentor. The Ski the Northwest Rockies Association’s 5th Grade Ski & Ride Passport allows parents of any 5th grader across the region to apply to the program, which grants three complimentary days at each participating hill. That includes familiar names like 49 Degrees North near Chewelah, Wash.; Lookout Pass near Wallace, Idaho; Mt. Spokane just north of Spokane; and Silver Mountain in Kellogg, Idaho. The program opens up multiple options to introduce a 5^th grader to different local ski areas without paying for the student’s lift ticket (gear and lessons not included).  

To register, submit an application to Ski the Northwest Rockies and pay a $28 one-time processing fee. You’ll then receive a digital version of the passport that can be printed or shown on a phone at the ticket window (parent must be present). Photographer Richard Hallman lives for the mountains, their beauty, their wildness, and the chance to capture fleeting moments of adventure through his lens. But on one sunny day at Mt. Hood Meadows, that passion turned suddenly into a life-threatening emergency. 

It began with a moment of miscommunication between Richard and a group of snowboarders he was photographing. “It was an unfortunate accident, plain and simple,” he shared. “There was some faulty communication—100% on me.” 

Standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, Richard was struck by a rider in a violent collision that left him in immediate, excruciating pain. His ribs were shattered—15 fractures in total—and he was soon diagnosed with flail chest, a rare and serious injury in which a segment of the rib cage becomes detached from the chest wall. Additionally, he had a deviated trachea, and cardiac and pulmonary contusions. The result was intense pain, paradoxical breathing, and the constant threat of complications. 

Fortunately, Richard wasn’t alone. His friends leapt into action, calling for help. Mt. Hood Ski Patrol and the staff at Providence Meadows Clinic responded swiftly, stabilizing him on the slopes and requesting Life Flight Network.  

Life Flight Network arrived on scene quickly and immediately went to work, managing Richard’s pain and preparing him for the flight to Portland. 

“The outstanding professionalism of Life Flight—just incredible,” Richard wrote. The flight crew delivered ICU-level support in the air, shortening the time it took to get him to definitive care at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, where the trauma team took over. 

As he began his recovery in the hospital, Richard learned that while surgery wasn’t required, the road ahead would be long. “I’m definitely going to be sidelined for a few months,” he said. “The primary goal now is to manage the pain and regain mobility.” 

The recovery wasn’t just physical. Emotionally, Richard was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from friends, family and followers. “I got extremely lucky,” he wrote. “It could’ve been a lot worse. A LOT worse. I firmly believe things would have been potentially dire without timely intervention by Life Flight Network. I never imagined I’d be one of their patients but am so grateful they were there when I needed them.” 

He promised to take time to reflect, heal, and share what he learned: “Accidents happen, especially when we’re adventuring in the mountains. We need to treat them with reverence and great respect. Like everything in life, this is a rare and profound learning experience.” 

Twelve weeks later, that journey came full circle. Richard visited Life Flight Network’s base in Dallesport, Ore., where he met with the pilot and flight nurse who were with him on that fateful day. “It was a big, full circle moment,” he wrote. “I got to thank Eileen, my primary caregiver, and Brian, my pilot, face to face. I can’t thank Life Flight Network enough for helping me in my time of need.” 

Though still not fully recovered, Richard estimates he’s about 90% back to normal and feeling strong. He ended the visit with a heartfelt recommendation: “I highly encourage everyone to have a Life Flight Network membership—it’s money well spent, and, more importantly, it gave me peace of mind.” 

Now, with gratitude in his heart and the mountains still calling, Richard is ready to keep moving forward. “To all who supported me—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Here’s to getting back to 100%.”

This summer, Mt. Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park invites young adventurers to trade ski boots for hiking shoes and bike helmets. The 2025 camps emphasize outdoor fun, skill-building and environmental learning all at Spokane’s namesake mountain playground.  

What sets Mt. Spokane’s day camps apart, says outdoor recreation director Katrin Ferraro, is the wildness of the mountain and the surrounding state park. “Our day camps feel a lot like an overnight wilderness camp—kids get many of the same experiences without needing to stay overnight.” Many campers are already skiers, she says, but for a lot of them, it’s their first time seeing the ski area up close without the snow, which helps cultivate a stronger connection to the mountain. 

Both the Mountain Adventure and Mountain Bike camps are built to boost kids’ confidence and outdoor skills—without overdoing it. Leaders also focus on fun and play, creating space for campers to be kids, says Ferraro. “We do an activity where one of the counselors dresses up in a bear costume, and the kids practice what to do if they see a bear—being big and loud, using squirt guns as bear spray.” While bear encounters at camps are unlikely, it’s a fun, memorable way to teach wildlife safety and appreciation.  

Mountain Adventure Camps 
Designed for children ages 5–13, this three-day camp immerses participants in the natural beauty of Mt. Spokane State Park. Activities include hiking, climbing, crafts, and games, all emphasizing nature appreciation. Choose from three Mon.-Wed. sessions: June 23–25, July 14–16, or July 28–30. Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ($209 registration fee includes a t-shirt). 

Mountain Bike Camps 
Mt. Spokane offers some of the only kids’ mountain bike camps in the region, including options for new and experienced riders. The four-day mountain bike camps for kids ages 7–15 encourage them to build mountain bike skills and confidence. Some of the camps even offer the chance to shuttle some of the trails.   

• Beginner Camp: July 7–10, focusing on foundational skills on double-track trails. 

• Advanced Skills Camp: July 7–10, for riders ages 10–17 with prior singletrack experience. 

• All-Levels Camps: July 21–24 and Aug. 4–7, accommodating various skill levels with group placements based on ability. 

Each mountain bike camp runs Mon.–Wed. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thurs. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ($329 registration fee includes a t-shirt). Participants must bring a mountain bike with at least seven gears, front suspension and no pedal brakes, along with a helmet and other appropriate safety gear. “It’s incredible how much confidence kids build—on the trails, in themselves, and in the outdoors,” says Ferraro. 

Junior Camp Counselor Program 
New this year, this two-week program offers teens ages 14–16 a chance to gain leadership experience while assisting with both camp types. Participants develop mentoring skills, boost their biking abilities, and learn what it takes to be a future camp counselor ($199 registration fee and reliable transportation required). Session options run June 23–25 and July 7–10, July 14–16 and July 21–24, or July 28–30 and Aug. 4–7. 

Parents Can Work in the Lodge or Hit the Trails while Kids Play 

Simplify your drive to and from Mt. Spokane’s day camps by staying up on the mountain to get some work done (or go for a ride or hike yourself!) Parents can use Lodge 2 as a workspace or relaxing place to read with Wi-Fi and a coffee shop or hit the trails.

Currently, only Silver Mountain Resort and 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort allow the use of ski bikes on their chairlifts (rented from Wheel Sport or owned by you as no rentals are available on-mountain), but other ski areas may soon accommodate this growing sport. The SNO-GO ski bike rentals available at Wheel Sport have been designed to be lift-friendly and are as easy to load as skis and snowboards. Simply approach the lift with your ski bike like you would with skis or a snowboard, let the chair slide underneath the lift bar on the bike while you hold the handlebars and put the bike in between your legs. When first visiting a resort, Wheel Sport recommends checking with the lift operators for any unique lift protocols they may have for ski bikes. The lift operator can assist you with positioning the bike on the chairlift too.  

Gearing Up for a Day of Ski Biking 

Similar to any outdoor activity, ski biking carries inherent risk, but it is not necessarily more dangerous than skiing or snowboarding. In fact, the seated position and lower center of gravity can provide more stability and control, potentially reducing the risk of certain types of falls or injuries. However, as with any sport, proper instruction, adherence to safety guidelines, and the right equipment will make all of the difference. When gearing up for a day of snow biking, dress for a day outside in the winter like you would for skiing or snowboarding, with gloves, a helmet, weather-appropriate layers, and wind and water-resistant jacket and pants. It’s also widely recommended to wear snowboard boots, although sturdy winter boots can work as well. Ski boots are not advised!
