For a unique way to get outside and explore downtown Coeur d’Alene, check out Tours CDA. Gary and Linda Cooper offer three ways to experience the history and sights of downtown Coeur d’Alene: an Explore Coeur d’Alene Segway Tour, a Taste Coeur d’Alene Segway Tour, or an e-bike rental.

If you’ve never ridden a Segway, the couple makes the learning process easy and simple. You even get to practice before heading out on the street or trail.

Gary leads the way while pointing out interesting places and historical facts, Linda brings up the rear and makes sure there aren’t stragglers, and every rider is connected by one-way headsets.

New this year, the Coopers are coordinating with several unique Coeur d’Alene eateries to provide five stops along the route for food. The tour ends with a cider flight or beer pint at Coeur d’Alene Cider.

If you want a new way to explore the Lake City this summer, consider “gliding” to take in the sights instead of walking.

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

For over four decades, ROW Adventures has been leading people on guided outdoor adventures here in the Inland Northwest and around the world. While the Coeur d’Alene-based company is most well-known locally for guided whitewater trips, ROW recently started offering fully-guided bike tours here in the Inland Northwest.

This new service includes several options for multi-day bike tours on trails like the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes with the potential to link up to the Route of the Hiawatha and other North Idaho rail trail routes. These new tours will no-doubt be a hit with cyclists from around the world looking to explore the region’s truly world-class rail trail network, but they are also a great option for local cyclists who may not be comfortable with a self-supported multi-day bike tour.

Some of the biggest challenges for any DIY bike tour are the shuttle and having to haul all your own gear. ROW’s guided trips include meal stops, a sag wagon (van) providing support if riders need it, and comfortable hotel lodging each night. The tours also come with knowledgeable guides who can help you learn about the places you’re pedaling past, and is a great option for people who want to focus on the ride and get a good night’s rest each night.

Check out all of ROW’s bike tour options, including the Bitterroot Bonanza that includes biking, rafting, and kayaking in the same week, at Rowadventures.com/biking.

It’s official—the full-length Ironman series will return to Coeur d’Alene in 2021 as part of a rotating series, and local athletes are stoked. The full Ironman distance (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) has been absent from the region since 2017. While Coeur d’Alene has continued to host the Ironman 70.3, the return of the full Ironman on June 27, 2021, ups the competitive spirit again in the area.

“The excitement for the return of the full Ironman is in full swing,” says James Gable, President of Team Blaze Spokane, the largest triathlon training group in the Inland Northwest. “It’s a lifestyle for a lot of these athletes.”

Part of that lifestyle comes from community training. Gable says his group races and volunteers at Ironman Coeur d’Alene to support an event that inspires a healthy community. “[Coeur d’Alene] is a wonderful venue, and the rotating schedule is great for athletes to experience both distances,” he says.

At Ironman Coeur d'Alene, the winner usually finishes between 8 and 8 1/2 hours.
At Ironman Coeur d’Alene, the winner usually finishes between 8 and 8 1/2 hours.

The rotating full Ironman will take place in St. George, Utah, in 2020, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 2021, and a location yet to be announced in 2022. Meanwhile, this year’s Ironman 70.3 Coeur d’Alene will offer 40 slots to the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand.

Editor’s Note: Check event websites for any schedule changes and to confirm dates. As of the date this story was posted online, Ironman 70.3 has not been re-scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before Ironman, there was the CDA triathlon.
