In 2019, Bike to Work Week will be May 13–19, with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17.

40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work. With increased interest in healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that, from 2000 to 2013, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 62 percent.

In fact, among the 51 largest U.S. cities, 43 hosted Bike to Work Day events in 2010. The City of Denver reported the highest rate of participation with one out of every 28 adults participating in its 2010 Bike to Work event. That effort makes a difference: Many people who participate in their Bike to Work Day promotion as first-time commuters become regular bike commuters.

Think so? Well now you can prove it. The Commute Challenge is a part of next month’s Bike to Work Week and is open for registration now. Out There Monthly sponsors Spokane Bike to Work Week because we feel bike commuting is an excellent way to bridge the gap between recreational cycling and alternative transportation–among other things. Here’s the details:

Gather your co-workers, classmates, friends, neighbors or anyone else you know and form a team for the Commute Challenge presented by Group Health! Registration for the Commute Challenge during Bike To Work Week, May 10-16, is now open.

To register, visit www.biketoworkspokane.org. Registration is free.
The first step in the Commute Challenge is to select a team captain (go ahead…select yourself!). The Captain will recruit a team of 4 to 10 riders from their work place, school, neighborhood or any other organization and that team will compete against other teams from similar organizations. Bike To Work Spokane will announce winners based on a variety of contributions to bike commuting: new commuters recruited, mileage and more. All Team Captains will receive a cool Bike To Work T-Shirt.

In addition to The Commute Challenge presented by Group Health, there are plenty of other great events during Bike To Work Week 2009:

· Bicycle Education Fair: Sunday, May 10, RiverPark Square, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Open to Public
· Kickoff Breakfast: Monday May 11, Riverfront Park, 7-9 a.m. Open to registered BTW participants
· Walk & Roll to School Day: Wednesday May 13, participating Spokane Public Schools
· Energizer Stations: Wednesday May 13, locations countywide, 7-9 a.m.
· Wrap-up Party: Friday May 15, Steam Plant Grill, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Open to registered BTW participants

For more information on all of these events, visit www.biketoworkspokane.org.
Last year Bike To Work Week attracted almost 1,000 participants. This year’s Bike To Work Week goal is 1,200 participants and more than 25,000 vehicle miles avoided.

Bike commuting provides benefits to commuters, employers and the community as a whole. Commuters can be healthier, save on transportation expenses and enjoy the trip to and from work. Employers benefit by having healthier, happier employees and lower health care costs. And, the community benefits from less vehicle traffic, less pollution and a healthier population.

Bike To Work Week is supported by the following sponsors:
Gold Wheel: The REI Foundation, Group Health, Unico Properties, Alt 29 Design, Spokane Public Radio
Silver Spoke: Out There Monthly, City of Spokane, Steam Plant Grill/Coeur d’Alene Brewing Company, Mountain Gear, Cuda Apparel
Bronze Gear: Lee & Hayes, REI Spokane, North Division Bicycle Shop, Silver Collector Car Auctions

Bike to Work Spokane is organized by a volunteer committee as a project of the SpokeFest Association, a 501c3 non-profit organiation, in partnership with the City of Spokane Advisory Board and the Bicycle Alliance of Washington.
